Should I Be a Mechanical Engineer?

As you set off for college you know you love all things mechanical. So what does that mean for your college studies? Should you be a mechanical engineer or an engineering tech in New York? What other options are available to you if you want to use your mechanical aptitude?

First of all let’s look at some attributes that make for a good mechanical engineering technician. If you answer most of these questions in the affirmative, then a mechanical career might just be for you.

Mechanical Aptitude?                    

  • Do you like to design new tools, gadgets and machines?
  • Do you like to take things apart, discover how they work and then put it back together again?
  • Are you interested in working on robots and/or design roller coasters?
  • Are you interested in working with tools and dies in a manufacturing environment?
  • Are you good at math? Are you good at physics?
  • Do you love ‘tinkering’ with anything mechanical?
  • Know the difference between being a mechanic and being a mechanical engineer. It takes 4 years of undergraduate work to become an engineer.
  • Do you need to know how things work? Are you into solving problems?

Advantages of Mechanical Engineering

  • Mechanical Engineering is the broadest of all the engineering disciplines.
  • Learn many aspects of engineering – stress analysis, engineering design, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics.
  • You can work in manufacturing, project management, equipment design and process design.
  • You can also work for any type of company in any industry
  • American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) states that the average pay for a Mechanical Engineer is $53,000.
  • United States Bureau of Labor Statistics claims the average pay for a mechanical engineer is $70,000 per year.

How To Decide If Mechanical Engineering is Right for You

  • Find a mentor – develop a relationship with a mechanical engineer and learn all you can about what that person actually does in their job every day.
  • Join the Automotive Club if you have one at school. Get very involved as this will tell you what you really want. Join a Formula SAE or EcoCar Challenge.
  • Do whatever you can as much as you can during high school to ‘test your mechanical aptitude and be confident this is what you want before you spend the time and money attaining a mechanical engineering degree.

Should you be a mechanical engineer? Do you need a master’s degree in mechanical engineering?  Masters would certainly enhance your career opportunities and perhaps open up new fields of study and endeavor for you.


Should you be a mechanical engineer? If you are good at math and love to tinker with things then perhaps mechanical engineering is the right career field for you. Take the time to do your homework before you decide to major in mechanical engineering. By your senior year in high school you should have a mentor who you can shadow for at least one day. The best thing would be to have one mentor and then set up several places where you can shadow several different ME doing a variety of different jobs.
